We asked the diaspora what they think of tomorrow’s rally in support of PM Abiy Ahmed and the responses were surprising!

This interview was with an Oromo-Ethiopian in his early 30’s.

Q. What do you think of tomorrow’s rally to support PM Abiy?
A. “Good.”

Q. Would you go if you were there?
A. “Yes of course!”
Q. Why?
A. “Because I support Abiy. What he is doing right now is nothing short of miracles. People are actually freed from prison, people are speaking their minds freely, opposing parties both in and out of the country are welcomed to come in without government influence. The Prime minister has given hope for people in and outside of the country. He preached forgiveness, fairness and unity and people are buying it.” One of his supporters continues his reasoning as he further explains

“…plus TPLF is insisting they are losing control of the country because of Abiy and they want things back to the way they were. My support for Abiy is also out of the rejection I have for them. They would hopefully see that people are actually don’t want them and their leadership anymore. They need to go! They need to be brought to justice for all the injustice they have caused in Ethiopia, specifically the Oromo people and all their corruption.”

Q. What do you think of tomorrow’s rally to support PM Abiy?
A. “I feel really good about it.”
Q. Would you go if you were there?
A. “Definitely, Yes.”
Q. Why?
A. “Abiy is the result of Qeero’s protests and resistance. I support him because I want him to bring the change we need. He is actually doing that. Look at the bold steps he took so far. Releasing political prisoners, meeting with opposing parties, creating peace with Eritrea, inviting opposing parties to the country’s political platform. He actually brought Ethiopia’s people together. The country actually feels at peace after a very long time. I really think he is bringing change to the country.”

Q. What do you think of tomorrow’s rally to support PM Abiy?
A. “I’m very curious.”
Q. Would you go if you were there?
A. “No.”
Q. Why?
A. “Look, this is what’s happening again. Who brought Abiy to power? It was Qerroo. Who is the rally for tomorrow? For Abiy! Do you see the problem? Oromo protests/Oromo issue is again hidden behind shadow of PM Abiy. Does he give good speeches? Yes. But is he actually solving Qerro resistance problems? I doubt that! It feels like people are taken away with his speeches. I think that it is too soon to be showing this kind of support. He really needs to work on getting those issues solved first before gaining all this praise for what the Qerro group brought up.”

Q. What do you think of tomorrow’s rally to support PM Abiy?
A. “110% good.”
Q. Would you go if you were there?
A. “Yes, 150%.”
Q. Why?
A. “Because he has been showing the characteristics of a good leader. Millions of Ethiopians are with him because they believe in the changes he can bring. I am with him because he is a real leader.”

Q. What do you think of tomorrow’s rally to support PM Abiy?
A. “Very Good.”
Q. Would you go if you were there?
A. “Yes.”
Q. Why?
A. “He is bringing change in the country. Qeerro brought him to this position, but now the entire country is with him. That is very good. I think Ethiopian people and Qeerroo are more focused on what he can do to better the situation of the country rather than the political party they are affiliated with. As long as he does what he is saying, I think he would bring us to a better future.”

Q. What do you think of tomorrow’s rally to support PM Abiy?
A. “Very good.”
Q. Would you go if you were there?
A. “Yes, I would most likely go.!”
Q. Why?
A. “I believe that he is the type of leader that the country has been in need of all these years. He is bringing miraculous change in the history of the Ethiopian country. The one thing that I wish he would mention more of is give thanks, and highly acknowledge Qeerroo’s sacrifices and the selfless work they have done to help put him in the position he is right now. However, I also do understand that his tactics seem very strategic to bettering the country as a whole, without favoring the needs/desires of one particular group over the other. In all honestly, with all the bloodshed and bad tension that has been going on in the country, I’m just hoping that through his leadership, he will bring about a genuine unity within the country that will help it prosper and grow in every aspect possible.”
